DES MOINES – Senior leadership abounds at Aplington-Parkersburg.

Tenth-ranked Aplington-Parkersburg, which has an all-senior roster, rallied from an early eight-point deficit to beat No. 7 Panorama 48-38 in the Class 2A quarterfinals.

Laura Toben led the Falcons with 13 points on perfect shooting and Shelby Sandoval scored 11, including seven in the third quarter when Aplington-Parkersburg took control. Katie Thompson added nine points and six rebounds for the winners, while Amanda Dunn had eight points and seven rebounds.

Toben went 5-for-5 from the field with three 3-pointers.

Aplington-Parkersburg trailed 14-6 early in the second quarter and was down 21-19 after Panorama’s Olivia Godfrey stole the ball and made a layup at the start of the second half.

But Thompson hit two straight 3-pointers from the left side to ignite a 19-6 run that turned the game around. Sandoval got three buckets inside during that stretch, while Toben made a layup and knocked down a 3-pointer, putting the Falcons ahead 38-27 early in the fourth quarter.

That cushion was enough for the Falcons to hold on and improve to 21-3 heading into a semifinal game against top-ranked and defending champion Western Christian at 11:45 a.m. Thursday.

Sidney Beckman led Panorama with 12 points and Godfrey scored eight for the Panthers, who finished 23-3.
