Senators ask court to uphold law defining marriage between a man and woman

WASHINGTON, Feb. 12 (UPI) — Ten U.S. senators have filed a friend-of-the-court brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold a law that defines marriage as a union between a man and woman.

The 10, all Republicans, want the high court to overturn the rulings of multiple lower courts that cleared the way for same-sex marriage, McClatchy Newspapers reported.

In their friend-of-the-court brief, the senators said it is inconsistent for the Justice Department to have assured Congress the Defense of Marriage Act, known as DOMA, was constitutional in the mid-1990s and now raise questions about it.

“The time to speak was in 1996, when Congress gave careful consideration to the need for DOMA,” the senators said.

Two years ago, President Obama instructed Attorney General Eric Holder to stop defending DOMA in federal court.

Last year two federal appellate courts upheld several lower court rulings that the law is unconstitutional.

The Supreme Court took up the matter in December and scheduled oral arguments for March 27.

Why do you think this is a republican thing? Do you really believe there are not a significant number of democrats who believe gay marriage is wrong? This isn’t a party issue, it is a moral issue. You have this thing for politics. Were you picked on as a child? Not breast fed? Never loved? You think this is a game? These immoral things have exponential negative impacts on our culture. Biology says this is wrong. We consider this kind of thing an abnormality in the animal kingdom. Before long the same crowd will push for pedifiles’ or rapists’ rights. Wrong is wrong. Sorry, I didn’t create the world.

Um, maybe some folks just have morals. Damn those people. How dare they? Can we quit calling this country one of demorcracy? That is just so wrong. It is we the morally corrupt that are supposed to get our way or we will stomp our feet until we do, like our children.

@Anonymous-yep-it should bring out the old cut and paste freaks.

More troll-bait. Now we watch your antiquated views be picked apart.

This is why the Republicans lose elections. They just keep on beating the same old dead horse. This has been decided in a lot of lower courts and even in the Iowa Supreme Court. It is called, “PICK YOUR BATTLES”, and win the ones you fight. I am not saying gay marriage is right because if it was up to me it wouldn’t be allowed, but it is the law now.
