Grassley Reaction to New Immigration Proposal

Senator Chuck Grassley, Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, gave the following statement regarding the immigration proposal put forth by Senators John McCain, Marco Rubio, Lindsey Graham, Jeff Flake, Chuck Schumer, Robert Menendez, Dick Durbin and Michael Bennet.

“We’ve seen efforts to pass comprehensive immigration reform come and go with little success.  And, while efforts in the past have not been successful, most of us can agree that a long-term solution is needed.  Another Congress shouldn’t be faced with this problem again.  So, there’s a lot to be said for these members working together and moving the issue forward.  And, while I especially appreciate the group’s focus on legal avenues of immigration, there are a lot of questions to be answered on even the most mundane of topics.  The proposal also lacks specificity on a number of big, difficult issues such as preventing illegal hiring through E-Verify and reducing chain migration so there’s more focus on merit.

“In order for legislation of this magnitude to get the buy-in and support from the American people and their Senators, regular order must be restored in the Senate.  Chairman Leahy and I have spoken, and the Judiciary Committee is ready for hearings to consider legislation and move the process along.”

I believe Senator Grassley understands the frustration of his electorate and a majority of the people in this country who are angry that nothing has been done about this problem for years with our leaky borders. Liberals may not like it, but most people want all illegals without green cards returned to their home countries to fix their own problems there. Take their education and skills back to their countries and make them better. They feel illegals are lawbreakers and do not deserve to be here to partake of our economy or government freebies. That is what a lot of people want to see happen and not some mass amnesty for them to “end the problem”. It will never end unless they close our borders to uninvited immigrants.
Don’t kill the messenger.

I agree with you Katie and Im not attacking Mr Grassley. Im just frustrated because I know this will just be more smoke and mirrors from the government, even if Chuck can get something done on Congress, Obama would veto unless of course if amnesty is granted. On the border the border patrol turns a blind eye to the invasion and yet is there harassing US citizens 50 miles north of the border. They refuse to let the states protect their own borders. It totally outrages me that the illegals are allowed to vote on a lot of states. Outrages me that they get welfare and free healthcare while I cant afford it as I am forced to compete with them in the construction trade as they are subsidized by the federal government. Our government is corrupt to the core and its destroying our country and we are powerless to stop it so far. I think state secession movements may be the only peaceful option we have left.

katie and todd, you 2 do understand that right now this isn’t a partisan issue. The senate committee working on this is 4 dems and 4 reps. If the republicans want to ever win the white house again they have to pass some sort of Immigration Reform. So this isn’t all about liberals.

And if you want all 11 million illegals deported just how would you go about doing that and where will the money come from?

There are plenty of military transports available to deport Illegals who will not pack up and go willingly. ICE needs to start auditing businesses known to hire illegals. I just want them to do their damned jobs according to our country’s existing laws.

katie I understand what you are saying but think about it. 11 million is 3 million more than the population of New York City. Realistcally there is no way they could all be deported. The government doesn’t have the money, time, and employee’s to get it done.

@Happy Guy-what you say is true. But, if they were to start defending our borders and keep anymore from coming in while they sent back what they can, in a few years they will have the job done. Just because they have not been following the laws for years is no reason not to start. Now I do agree that some of them should be allowed to stay but, a large number should be sent back. It will be very difficult to send back some that have been here for years and have done nothing but work. On the other hand there are a lot who do not fall into that category.

In other words nothing will get done again? They announced the number of Americans with out jobs at 12 million. They claim there are 11 million illegals here (Low ball estimate I am sure). I dont blame the illegals for coming here wanting to escape their horrible country. I blame the federal government for allowing this to happen but the bottom line is that the American people are paying a huge price for in so many ways.
