ISU women win Bill Bergan indoor track meet

logo_iowa_state_cyclonesAMES, Iowa – Iowa State got a record-setting performance from Ese Okoro in the 400-meter dash and the Cyclone women rolled to a team victory in the Bill Bergan Invitational Saturday in the Lied Center. The Iowa Staters finished the meet with 105 points, ahead of second-place Wisconsin (95). The Iowa State men, led by record-setting 800 man Edward Kemboi, finished fifth (56.25). Minnesota won the men’s meet with 123.25 points.

“We didn’t put too much emphasis on the meet in terms of the team scoring,” Iowa State head track and field coach Corey Ihmels said. “But we got a 20-year record off the board last week (DMR) and now we have another.”

Senior Ese Okoro won the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.54. With that time she currently
holds the 11th fastest time in the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Performance List. Her performance broke the school record, which was previously set at 54.57 (on a 200-meter track) by Edith Nakiyingi in 1989.

Cyclone Betsy Saina led the pack in the 3,000-meter run. The Cyclones took six of the top 10 spots. Saina placed first (9:04.57), Meaghan Nelson second (9:21.72), Dani Stack, fifth (9:30.20), Samantha Bluske sixth (9:34.75), Crystal Nelson seventh (9.38.96), Katy Moen ninth (9:52.56).

Ej Okoro won the 800-meter run clocking in at 2:06.43. Redshirt-sophomore Maggie Gannon earned fifth (4:56.91) in the mile run.

The Cyclone throwers took the top three spots in the shot put. Christina Hillman earned first (57-02.00), Danielle Frere second (52-07.50), and Hayli Bozarth third (52-01.00).

Laishema Hampton hurled the weight, 64-08.00, placing second.

Hannah Willms placed fourth with a mark of 5-04.25 in the high jump. Teammate Jordan Chelsea jumped a mark of 17-03.50 in the long jump.

The Iowa State women’s relay team took first in the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 3:42.96

Kemboi ran the 800-meters in 1:47.43, which placed him in the second spot in this year’s NCAA Division 1 Indoor Performance List. That effort bettered the previous mark of 1:48. 36 set by James Galvan in 2008.

“I could have gone faster,” Kemboi said. “I wanted to run under 1:47 but this was still a good result.”

Iowa State sprinter Nick Efkamp placed first in the 200-meter dash. Efkamp clocked a time of 21.35, a personal best.

Cyclone Ryan Sander clocked a time of 7.94 in the 60-meter hurdles, placing third. Teammate Ian Warner placed third in the 60-meter dash and Efkamp sixth.

Freshman Brian Llamas finished fourth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:12.86.

Falko Zauber led the Cyclones with a sixth-place finish in the mile run.

The men’s field events were led with a second-place finish from Jan Jeuschede in the shot put with a mark of 57-00.00. Mark Johnson earned sixth in the long jump with a mark of 22-05.25.

The Iowa State track and field team will compete in New York, N.Y. Friday at the New Balance Invitational. Results will be posted on cyclones.com at the conclusion of the meet.
