Progress Iowa delivers petitions to Grassley’s offices

Des Moines, Iowa – Progress Iowa and local activists joined Iowa taxpayers on Thursday at Sen. Chuck Grassley’s offices in Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Sioux City, and Waterloo to deliver letters and petitions from over 800 Iowans in support of tax fairness gathered by Progress Iowa, CREDO Action, and local volunteers.

Today’s events were part of a statewide series of petition deliveries and other events being organized across the country in partnership with the national coalition The Action.

“Iowans all over the state stood up today to demand Senator Grassley take immediate action for fairness and fiscal responsibility, and end the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest two-percent,” said Matt Sinovic, Executive Director of Progress Iowa. “As Grassley and House Republicans have stubbornly brought us closer to the fiscal cliff, we have called, emailed, written letters, and visited Grassley’s offices to deliver our message. Middle and working-class Iowans won’t stand by while Congress raises their taxes and threatens their futures.”

Progress Iowa is working in conjunction with AFSCME Iowa Council 61, Iowa Federation of Labor AFL-CIO, Iowa Alliance for Retired Americans, Iowa Citizen Action Network, Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement, Working Families Win, SEIU Local 199, South Central Iowa Federation of Labor, and Citizens for a Healthy Iowa to organize events this week with a focus on tax fairness and the “fiscal cliff.”

Middle class Iowans are gathering in Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Sioux City, Waterloo and around the country to tell Congress: “It’s time to set our priorities straight–tax cuts for the wealthy means fewer Pell Grants, cuts to Medicare and Social Security benefits, and more kids shoved into crowded classrooms.”

Yeh-Like Grassley will pay any attention to anything this liberal group submits. Might as well say the Unions and Democrats submitted it. It just floors me how people can want someone else to pay for their mistakes. I heard today (on CBS) that only 30% of people on Medicare pay for it (I am one of the 30%). The rest have a free ride and that is why Medicare is in trouble. Get the freeloaders and illegals off Medicare and it will be solvent in a hurry. Of course that will never happen. They will just raise the amount I pay and the rest will still be free. I think I will just get rid of my savings and join the poverty line. I will get more and it won’t cost anything.
