Man tries to leave son, 3, with strangers at bus station

Rosemary Regina Sobol, Chicago Tribune –

An intoxicated 31-year-old Wisconsin man was arrested late last night at the Greyhound bus station after asking complete strangers if someone could keep an eye on his 3-year-old son, police said.

Joseph Corter, of an unspecified address in Peshtigo, Wis., was charged with one count of misdemeanor endangering the life and health of a child, according to police.

The 3-year-old was not injured but the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services was notified and he was placed into their protective custody, police said.

It was about 11 p.m. when Corter, who police said was intoxicated, began approaching travelers and asking them if anyone could keep an eye on his son who was with him in the Near West Side station, police said.

Security officers spotted him and police were called to the station at 630 W. Harrison St. where Corter was arrested.

Corter, who does not have a local criminal history, is scheduled to appear in Misdemeanor Court at 2 p.m. on Dec. 10, police said.
