NORMAN, Okla. – No. 20 Iowa State (16-7, 9-3 Big 12) picked up its fourth-straight sweep on Saturday, downing Oklahoma (19-9, 8-5 Big 12) by the score of 25-12, 25-20, 25-21. The win is the Cyclones’ sixth-straight.
Freshman Andie Malloy recorded her first-ever double-digit kills performance, leading the team with 12 on the day. Libero Kristen Hahn had 23 digs, her 12th match of the season with at least 20 digs.
The Cyclones out-blocked Oklahoma, 9-2, behind five block assists from Jamie Straube and a career-best four block assists from Malloy. Setter Alison Landwehr also had four block assists, a season-best, and Tenisha Matlock got in on the action with three block assists.
Coming one kill away from double digits, Matlock hit .533 in the match, a season-high, with nine kills and one error on 15 swings. Straube was the other Cyclone with .300-plus hitting in the contest, connecting for six kills and .333 hitting.
Three blocks in the first eight points, all involving Malloy, started things off well for the Cyclones, who opened up a 7-1 lead. It was all Iowa State after that; the Cyclones hit .333 in the opening game, holding the Sooners to .027 hitting. Straube led all players with four kills and Hahn recorded nine digs.
The Sooners stayed closer in set two but were unable to overcome another strong offensive set from the Cyclones, who hit .271 behind six kills from Malloy. Straube and Landwehr each recorded two block assists in the set and Iowa State led in blocks, 6-1, at intermission. Iowa State is 7-0 this season
Iowa State held a 20-17 lead when Oklahoma called timeout in the third set and rallied to tie the score, 20-20. The Cyclone offense would not be denied and took five of the final six points for the 25-21 win. Hahn had another solid digging game, totaling eight digs to end her day.
The Cyclones play Kansas State on Wednesday at 5 p.m. CST on ESPNU.
