San Diego woman says she’s mother of ‘Dark Knight’ shooting suspect

By Tony Perry, Los Angeles Times –

SAN DIEGO — San Diego police on Friday morning arrived at the home of a woman who has identified herself as the mother of the suspected Colorado shooter.

Shortly after 6 a.m., police started arriving at the home in an upscale part of northern San Diego. The woman had called for apparent protection.

Even before police arrived, news crews were camped out in front of the home in the Torrey Highlands neighborhood.

The woman had identified herself to ABC News as the mother of the man suspected of opening fire during a midnight showing Friday of the new Batman movie in Aurora, Colo., a suburb of Denver.

Police in Colorado have a suspect in custody but have not identified him.

At least 12 people were killed and 50 injured in the attack. Witnesses said the gunman released a noxious gas in the theater before opening fire, making escape more difficult. Survivors said they were forced to run past bodies in the aisles and theater.

The gunman was armed with a rifle, a shotgun and two handguns, police said. Cellphone videos show panicked moviegoers running — some screaming — and others with blood visible.

The death toll was revised downward from an earlier figure of 14 dead given by police in Aurora.

Crowds of worried family members and friends were gathering at Denver-area hospitals, hoping to hear about their loved ones.

The shooting came minutes after the 12:05 a.m. premiere showing of the widely anticipated premiere of “The Dark Knight Rises,” the third Batman film in the series by director Christopher Nolan.
