Iowa AFL-CIO President Ken Sagar on the Mitt Romney Campaign Visit to Des Moines:

(Des Moines IA.) As Mitt Romney visits Iowa and cities across the Midwest working people, retirees, jobless workers and other members of the 99% are speaking up, fed up with a campaign disconnected from realities. He and his investors made millions shipping U.S. jobs overseas and handing out pink slips to working people.

In advance of Mitt Romney’s speech tomorrow, Iowa AFL-CIO President Ken Sagar, Midge Slater with Iowa Alliance for Retired Americans, and Morgan Miller, a recent University of Iowa graduate will hold a press conference to welcome Mitt back to Iowa by taking a look at his business philosophy and what it would mean for our economy.

Mitt Romney has repeatedly cited his business experience as his chief qualification to be President, claiming he would use it to boost the economy, create jobs, and reduce the deficit. Romney’s business strategy wasn’t about strengthening companies and creating jobs for long-term economic growth. It wasn’t about investors and workers playing by the same set of rules, and it certainly wasn’t about creating an economy built to last by rewarding hard work and responsibility and strengthening the security of middle-class families.

In a career of buying and selling companies, Romney’s pattern was to reap quick profits for himself and his investors at the expense of workers and communities. Sometimes it meant sending American jobs overseas. Other times, it meant cutting wages and benefits. In Romney’s economic philosophy, CEOs and wealthy investors prosper by any means necessary, even when it meant companies failed and workers were left behind. Romney believes in two sets of rules – one for people like him, another for everyone else.

Mitt Romney wants to go back to the philosophy that created the economic crisis. Iowans want to move America forward – to an economy built to last, where hard work pays off, responsibility is rewarded, and everyone has a fair shot, does their fair share, and plays by the same rules.

“The more Iowans Meet Mr. 1%, the more we see the real Romney,” said Iowa AFL-CIO President Ken Sagar. “Romney’s support of the Ryan budget  is proof that he does not care about the working class here in Iowa and across the country. Romney was a bully in high school and he was a bully in business raking in millions by slashing jobs, shuttering factories and devastating communities. American does not need more bullies; we need leaders who will work for good jobs, quality education and a stable economy. Mr. 1% and h is failed policies don’t work for 99% of us. Iowans demand better.”

In Iowa and across the state, working people are learning more about the choice we face this November and sharing this information in our unions, community groups and with friends and families. This video shows just a few of the glaring examples of how out-of-touch Mitt Romney is with working people. Watch the Meet Mr. 1% video here.

  1. I just love it when these ignorant people can’t back up what they say and resort to name calling because it’s all they know. Holcim is gone and Lehigh is struggling. The Ice Machine Plant is gone, White Farm is gone and many others have gone out of business just because they can’t compete with the high costs of union wages but even more the benefit packages are the killers. Do I agree that some management will bleed a company, ABSOLUTELY THEY WILL. I have sat in several board meetings and seen them lay off people not because theydidn’t have the work but because they hadn’t made enough profit for their bonuses. It’s a two way street but don’t think the unions are are clean either.

  2. From the looks of it, the mighty unions and obmama sure haven’t helped out Iowa’s 99% either!!

  3. People better wake up a realize this guy is for his rich buddies. The trickle down theory has never worked or helped the working class. So unless you are filthy rich this guy will not care about you. Mark my words he will propose the rich pay less in taxes and the rest of us will end up paying more.

    1. Unions have by far closed more manufacturing operations then Romneey ever thought of. The like expectancy of a small business is less than 10 years when the AFL/CIO unions come in. They bleed a business so they either have to go to another country or go out of business. Unions with their mentality of fighting the business they depend on for survival have outlived their usefullness. they are unwilling or unable to change with the times. Of course they are going to put down anything Romney says. They are part of the welfare, nanny state we now have.

      1. If the companys would treat people good the union won’t get in. General Mc Nider gave the employees at northwestern cement the same wages and benefits that union employees got at leigh. They only went union when Holcium took over and treated them like crap.

      2. Are you for real name one company that you can prove a union closed down. People can actually look at history and see that when unions were strong the people and this country was at its best. Romneys only concern is to pad his own pockets and the hell with the employees. Thats not call being a good business man its called greed and that is why companies close their doors in america and move overseas where they dont have to worry about employees health and safety, enviroment, paying their fair share of taxes, and the list goes on they can polute all they want if thats what you want for america vote for romney

      3. There would not be a need for unions if the employer would treat people with respect and dignity. Unions dont cause the death of companies but bad management does. You must have experience in that.
