Softball: NIACC splits Wednesday’s games

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – NIACC softball continued play at the Snowbird Classic on Wednesday with a 4-3 loss to Brookdale Community College (NJ) and an 8-0 win over Massasoit Community College (MA).

NIACC (4-4) took Brookdale, who has won the four of the last six NJCAA Division III championships, to the limit in game one.  Cassie Pappas (Fr., Mason City, IA) hit a three-run homerun in the third-inning against to give the Trojans a 3-1 lead at that time.   It was Pappas’ third homer in the last four games.

Brookdale tied the game in the fifth and scored the winning run in the seventh.  Hailie Eckstein (Fr., Larsen, WI) pitched the entire way, and dropped to 1-3 pitching so far in her freshman campaign.

NIACC made short work of Massasoit by winning in five innings.  The Trojans jumped on the Warriors early with three runs in the first, and scored at least one run in the next three innings.

Krista Grutz (Fr., Dubuque, IA) and Eckstein both had a pair of hits, while Pappas added two more RBI.   Over the last four games, Pappas has had 11 RBI.

Jessica Robinett (Fr., Maxwell, IA) struck out five in the win, and moved to 3-1 on the mound.

NIACC will wrap up the Snowbird Classic on Thursday with games against Finger Lakes Community College (NY) and Alfred State College (NY).
