MASON CITY – Don Nelson was sworn in as a Mason City Park Board member on Monday, December 19th at 1:30 PM.
Nelson won a seat on the Park Board as a write-in candidate in this fall’s election.
“I look forward to continuing to serve the citizens of Mason City on the Parks and Recreation Board,” Nelson said.
Meanwhile, three new City Council members were sworn in on Wednesday.
City officials say the public was not invited to this event, although a Globe Gazette reporter was present. “The swearing in was not intended to be a public event,” City Admininstrator Brent Trout said. “I did the swearing in ceremony of Don Nelson for his Park Board seat on Monday without anyone present.”
Out-going City Councilmen Max Weaver and Jeff Marsters said the norm is to open these types of events to the public.
“This was always announced for the 12 & 8 years Don & I have been on (the Council),” Marsters said.

The one thing about democracy is that people have the choice to vote for the candidate of their choice. They also have the right not to vote. To say those that won the election are not the majority is just moronic.
Well Larry, What exactly did you do to see your people elected? Oh I know, you ranted and moaned. I didn’t say I agreed with the people we put in, but I’m damn sure believe in the process that put them there. If you didn’t get out and campaign then you’re part of the problem. Take your blood pressure meds or move to Syria.
I’m pretty sure that given the low numbers of who actually voted…it’s not really representative of the population. Why more people didn’t vote? I don’t know…maybe the process needs to be revisited. Perhaps polls should be kept open all week, instead of just one day.
4496 voters were pre-registered and voted.
839 absentee ballots were cast.
10 new registrations were completed on voting day.

So 14642 people didn’t vote that day. 73% of the people that could vote…didn’t. What kind of democracy is that?

I have lived in this city for al of my life (almost 70 years) and have never seen a worse bunch of socialists.

Live there for one year and come back, then get an x-ray and see if your bitch gland has shrunk. Don will do an excellent job on the Park Board just as he did on the City Council. It won’t take long for the people to find out how important Nelson and Marsters were in keeping our drunken Mayor and his co-horts under control. There is no one to stop them now. Get ready to subsidize the old whore house (Park Inn) and for a new Hockey Rink that we don’t need or want. The rink needs to stay at the fair grounds to help support that facility. Good Job Don.

Now that the three members that actually looked after out tax dollars are gone expect the real circus to begin. Tornquist has already made moves to shove the multipurpose boat anchor down our throats which will also put the final dagger into the heart of the North Iowa Fair Grounds. Clear Lake has always been known for high taxes. They are now at $27 per thousand of valuation and MC is at$35. They have also been able to have a balanced budget for the last five years. Great job Clear Lake leaders any of you willing to be on the MC council.
Only that part of Clear Lake in the Ventura school district is at $27. Clear Lake in the Clear Lake school district is at $32. That’s for all taxing entities. Mason City’s part is about 13.50 including the voter-approved library bond. Clear Lake’s levy’s about $10.54.
So the circus that was once known as the City Council is now found at the Parks Board. Why the citizens elected this dinosaur, I can’t fathom.
Expect this type of activities to be the norm under the extreme rule of backdoor bookmeyer and the seven thieves. Hold onto your pocketbooks.
I’m I the only one that gets upset that everything has to be so private!! We the citizens elected these people and we can’t even be there to see them get sworn in. Why does everything have to be so private?
