WASHINGTON ó The United States condemned the violence and instability in Yemen at the end of a day that saw 40 people killed in the worst violence to hit the capital Sanaa in a week.
State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland repeated U.S. calls for President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down, transfer power and arrange for new elections before year’s end.
Saleh unexpectedly returned from Saudi Arabia on Friday after three months of recovering from an attack on his compound in June.
“Too many Yemenis have lost their lives and each day that passes without a peaceful and orderly transition is another day that the Yemeni people are forced to live in an unstable environment that threatens their security and livelihood,” Nuland said.
Nuland said the United States supports the call by the Gulf Cooperation Council for formation of a committee to investigate the deaths of “innocent civilians.”
Elections should be held within the framework of the GCC initiative, she said.
