Four escape early morning Mason City house fire

MASON CITY – Mason City firefighters were dispatched to 717 South Jersey Avenue Thursday morning at about 4:30 a.m.

Flames were said to have been shooting out the windows, starting at the back of the house and then spread to the front.

Matt Reindl and his girlfriend, Courtney, said “We woke up with the neighbor pounding on our windows and door saying, ‘My house is on fire, my house is on fire.” The house that was on fire is owned by Gene Ward. Rory Buchite and Angela DiMarco are living there on contract.

“There isn’t much room between our houses, they had to break one of our windows, to get in theirs, Matt said. “It was really nice of him to let us know what was going on, and getting us out of the house.”

The neighbors also said that a man, a woman and two children that live in the house went to Mercy Hospital. “She is pregnant, and could have the baby at anytime. She had soot under her nose, so they wanted to get her there right away. She seemed okay. We helped get the two dogs out.”

The firefighters had the fire out before 4:35 a.m. The back of the house was still smoking about fifteen minutes later. They proceeded to hose it down some more.

At 7:30 a.m., the Fire Department was still there. They were taking things out of the house, and were investigating the cause of the fire.

No further information was readily available.
