The Mason City Police Department has recently received reports from elderly citizens saying they received a phone call from a subject claiming to be their grandchild. Usually the subject doesn’t know the grandchild’s name but will manipulate the conversation to get the citizen to provide a name. They then claim to have some type of emergency or are in jail and need bond money.
Police say this is not a new scam but seems to be more active in the Mason City area lately.
Police say that if you receive such a call, it is probably a scam. Do not send any money or provide any personal information to the caller without first validating their claims.
