Reinbeck man sentenced for possessing child pornography

A man who possessed computer images of child pornography was sentenced today to more than 7 years in federal prison.

Nathan Daniel Newell, age 29, from Reinbeck, Iowa, received the prison term after a March 22, 2011, guilty plea to one count of possession of child pornography.

In a plea agreement, Newell admitted that, on July 14, 2010, he possessed images of child pornography at his home in Reinbeck. Newell used a computer to possess 5 videos and approximately 93 still images of child pornography. He distributed some of the images to others by maintaining them in a shared folder linked to peer-to-peer file sharing software.

Newell was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade. Newell was sentenced to 87 months’ imprisonment to be followed by a 5-year term of supervised release. A special assessment of $100 was imposed, and Newell will be required to register as a sex offender. There is no parole in the federal system.

Newell is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
