MASON CITY – A Mason City garage suffered extensive damage after grass clippings in a bag ignited.

On May 9, at approximately 4:51 PM, the Mason City Fire Department was dispatched for the report of a garage fire at 15 S Indiana Ave. Fire crews arrived and found an unattached garage with smoke coming from inside. A small fire was seen from the doorway and was quickly extinguished by firefighters. The inside of the garage and the 2 vehicles that were in the garage received heavy soot damage. Investigation found the fire started from spontaneous combustion from lawn clippings, leaves and twigs placed in the garage in a lawn & leaf bag the day before. The fire did not extend to the structure or the vehicles.

No injuries were reported.

Emergency crews cleared the scene at approximately 6:25 PM. The cause of the fire was accidental. No outside agencies assisted with the fire.

That seems odd. Lawn clippings would still be wet the next day right? I could be wrong. I’m sure we don’t have all the details. 🙂
