Sign theft is illegal

AMES, Iowa–July 8, 2011ó The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) has placed signs, barricades, fencing and other road closure devices at locations where roads, bridges and ramps are closed due to construction or flooding. These traffic control devices are there for a reason, to protect the public.

Recently, vandals caused a dangerous situation on a bridge replacement project in Fayette County when they removed “Road Closed” signs and barricades. Luckily, no one was injured by this act, but vandalism like this could result in serious injury to a driver who travels into a work zone or flooded roadway.

These types of thefts will be reported to law enforcement and if caught, the person(s) responsible will be prosecuted. To report sign vandalism, including at Iowa DOT work zones, please contact local law enforcement.

Opening, moving, removing, damaging, altering or driving around these road closure devices in any way is not only against the law, it can be extremely dangerous. Entering and driving on a closed roadway is also illegal.

Going around a barricade could cost you more than the traffic fines … it could cost you your life.|
