AMES, Iowa ñ Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly announced Wednesday the signing of Belgium prep Julie Vanloo to a National Letter of Intent. Vanloo joins the 2011-12 class as the fifth signee.
“We are very excited to add Julie to the Iowa State program,” Fennelly said. “She is extremely skilled and her experience playing at a high level internationally will be a great asset to our team in the future. Julie loves the game and you can never have enough of those kinds of players.”
The 5-7 guard has been a member of Belgium’s Youth National Teams for the past four years. The Oostende, Belgium native most recently averaged a team-high 16.6 points to go along with 2.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game in the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championships. Against China, Vanloo had 31 points, six assists and five rebounds.
In five events with the national team, Vanloo has averaged 12.8 points per game.
Vanloo plays for the club team Declercq Stortbeton Waregem. In 2009, Vanloo was selected as the first division Rookie of the Year by the players and coaches after averaging 14.5 points.
