The North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) Concert Choir and the NIACC Singers are pleased to announce “Once Upon a Time” as the theme for the 2011 performance of Quodlibet. This performance will mark the 36th anniversary of the annual variety show. Show times will be at 7:30 p.m. on April 15 and 16 and at 2:00 p.m. on April 17 in the North Iowa Community Auditorium on the NIACC campus.
While the theme, Once Upon a Time, indicates love songs and fairytales, Jayson Ryner the show’s director says it is much more than that. “We are going with stories and songs that start with ‘Once Upon a Time’ and end ‘Happily Ever After’ but we are putting new twists with unexpected songs.”
One such story is the Grimm Brothers’ fairytale, Rapunzel. The Quodlibet version of Rapunzel will not feature songs from the Disney animated film but will use 1960’s hits, “Rescue Me” and “Hair,” to tell the story. Other numbers will refer to fairytales without actually telling the entire story. Featured selections include “Somebody to Love,” “Holding Out for a Hero,” and “Ever After.”
The NIACC Singers portion of Quodlibet will tell the story of boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, and then follow a unique story line. “I am most excited about our own arrangement of the Green Day song ‘Good Riddance.’ For this arrangement, the singers worked as a team to develop a cappella chart in the manner of the television show ‘The Sing Off’,” Ryner said. Collegiate a cappella is currently the most popular genre on campuses across the country.
Quodlibet will also feature ‘Teenaged Dream’ from the hit series ‘Glee.’ Anyone who likes that show will love the NIACC Singers and Quodlibet 2011!
