MASON CITY – Cerro Gordo county chairwoman Barb Hovland made it official today, announcing she will challenge Sharon Steckman, a Democrat, for a seat in the Iowa House of Representatives.

Barbara Hovland, 54, who resides in Mason City, currently serves as the Cerro Gordo GOP chairwoman. She has been deeply involved in the caucusing process and organizing the party locally.

“I am officially announcing my run for State Representative in District 53,” Mrs. Hovland announced. “As a lifelong resident in Cerro Gordo county, it will be an honor and blessing to be a voice for all citizens. Growing up in a middle class working family, hard work was instilled in me early on.

“I feel Mason City is long overdue for growth and prosperity and would work diligently to bring just that here. I currently serve as the Cerro Gordo GOP chairwoman, board member and Grant Director of The Mason City Foundation, aka The Music Man Square, past president of The Mason City Womans Club, past Chamber of Commerce diplomat, past President of The North Iowa Figure Skating Club, former North Iowa Girl Scout leader, member of Trinity Lutheran Church, along with chairing numerous charity events in North Iowa. I am the mother of a 28 year old son and 23 year old daughter. My husband, Tom is a local businessman.”

Mrs. Steckman is serving her third term in the Iowa House. She is a retired Mason City educator and is known for her strong advocacy for increased funding for Iowa public schools.  She will be seeking re-election.

Didn’t she get caught stealing?

Did she? What’s the story there?

Unfortunately for Republicans, Mrs. Hovland is seeking the spot for her own self-service rather than for the betterment of HD53. If she continues to treat those around her as if they are beneath her and as if their input does not matter, she is going to have an extremely difficult time rounding up votes for her cause. She’s also going to have to improve her written communication skills because reading some of the things she has submitted to the Gazette has been painful over the years.

I also find it interesting that she thought that her endorsement of Big Boy would be in any way helpful to his campaign, but I’m not surprised that she did because of her sense of self-importance. Is it normal for a GOP county chair to endorse a candidate anyway? Aren’t they supposed to be neutral because they run the caucus? Maybe her preoccupation with Christie is why the Cerro Gordo County Republican caucuses were such a fiasco…

Good points.

Paid staffer of Chris Christie after Trump wouldn’t have her on his staff…. #EpicFail

Hey Barb! Some of Tom’s old friend are making bets on whether he will watch the demorat debate or Nascar – if it’s the debate were going to vote for Berny the looney because he is losing it like the burn has.

Anyone that supported the liar, thief and crook Chris Christie the way that Hovland did, is not someone to be in any position of decision making.

“Stay strong Governor Christie! You are the candidate who is the best qualified, has the experience and leadership skills to take America in the right direction! Blessings to you and family!” – Barbara Hovland

Barb Hovland is just fluff.
Stick to what you do know Babs, like how to accessorize or what shoes look best with what outfit.

Wow…… you nailed it Samuel. Barbie is a dolly.

In Grassley’s case I can see it 200 years is too long; but with both Stekman & Regan I see two accomplished representatives who have just now hit their stride. They know the road, they are well informed on how this works and they have developed important connections that would be lost if they were not there..

All they know how to do is Spend, Spend, Spend. As long as it is taxpayer money.

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Seems logical enough. I don’t see anything around here that needs fixing, Steckman along with her counterpart Amanda Regan have been a winning pair for North Iowa, both hard working and effective. I think if you want to roll the dice….go to a casino.

Term limits for all means everyone.

LVS- I agree we need term limits on all political positions.
It does the average citizen no good, IMO, To have career politicians no matter what party they are from.

Then your love for the current governor is hypocritcal.

I have no love for the current governor. He was just 100% better than the crook they ran against him. And, 200% better than Culver.

I like the comment – Freeze all school spending and make them pay for their health care (everyone else has to except fat cat public servants) Give the private sector a chance to catch up to public servants wages and benefits – after all -we are their golden goose and you know what happens when you neglect _OH well – just a scary thought. Like in chit cago/detroit/wisconsin . Steckman is woned by the public servant unions which includes the largest bullying union in the United states – Teachers Union – logo -We needs more MOOONEY -ITS FOR THE KIDS !!! BS/BS

If you freeze all school spending, then all the costs that have risen over the past year are negative balance items right there. And, as far as I know, the majority of teachers (not administrators, mind you) do pay for their health care or a large portion of it. Which means, in the long run, it will cost more money to make up for the money scrimped this time. Looked at fixed costs for the districts as a way of determining new money. Look at Forest City as an example of how not to endear yourselves to your employees or the public. A few months ago the superintendent said the district needs to cut $600,000 from its budget after offering early retirement packages. Now, he has committed $2 million to a fine arts facility. If the district needs to cut money, how can they offer $2 million of money they don’t apparently have?

Time to get rid of Steckman. Three terms is more than enough. I don’t know if this lady is the right person or not, but Steckman should leave.

Steckman is actually in her 4th term, not her third.

LVS isn’t the sharpest tool in the box. In fact, hes a french fry short of a happy meal.

Pretty sure the article says three terms. Why don’t you get a 2nd grader to read it to you.

Iowa House . org states that Steckman is presently in her 4th term. The information in this article is inaccurate. Lets point the naughty finger at the author, not LVS. Her picture captioned directly above also spells her last name incorrectly. Steckman not Steckmann.

Therein lies the problem, LVS thinks that everything “published ” on NIT is the gospel truth.
But then again, he beleives all kinds of BS and the truth is irrelevent to him.

Sharon Steckman is in her 4th term in office.
November, 2008 Steckman was elected to the 13th District Seat
November, 2010 Steckman won re-election to the 13th District seat
November, 2012 Steckman won re-election to the 13th District seat
November, 2014 Steckman won re-election to the 13th District seat

Who gives a shit. Certainly not me. And, I don’t give a shit about you either.

LVS, the reason that you don’t give shit is because you are so full of shit.
You are so full of shit that there should be flush handles where your ears are.
You are so full of shit that when you comment I don’t know whether to hand you toilet paper or a breath mint.

He’s 2 Corinthians short of a Bible.
