CEDAR RAPIDS – A woman who committed Social Security Fraud for approximately eleven years pled guilty on July 2, 2015, in federal court in Cedar Rapids.
Angela Carmichael, 49, from Aplington, Iowa, was convicted of one count of Supplemental Security Income Benefits Fraud.
In a plea agreement, Carmichael admitted that, between June 2003 and June 2014, she hid the fact from the Social Security Administration that she was living with her husband in order to continue to receive Supplemental Security Income benefits. Carmichael admitted she lied to the Social Security Administration in order continue to receive benefits to which she would not have been entitled if the Social Security Administration knew she was living with her husband. During this period of time, Carmichael received over $68,000 in benefits to which she was not entitled.
Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Carmichael remains free on conditions of release previously set pending sentencing. Carmichael faces a possible maximum sentence of five years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment.

Given that poor and disabled people end up incarcerated for white collar crimes while politically connected or affluent people walk away with probation and fines, there is a distinct possibility she will be sentenced to jail or prison. You may be correct.
You shouldn’t pass judgement on others while you, yourself are committing a huge fraud with the federal government.

Obviously she didn’t want to be associated with his income, so what kind of money was he making and what did he do for his income? You may as well spill the beans. If I’m wrong about her, then I’ll admit it. But that still won’t change the larger political implications of this story in comparison to the theft stories I’ve shared.

I don’t know this woman personally nor her specific circumstances, that’s why I was asking for more details. Are you insinuating she’s an alcoholic? Do you know specifically what she drinks while in the bar? Was alcohol a factor in her initial renal failure? There is a difference between SSD and SSI. If she didn’t work enough prior to being disabled, she wouldn’t have earned enough for SSD, thus she would have
Received SSI. Even if you qualify for SSD you can still get
SSI if you have minor children living with you, which would also increase the amount by nearly $200 month per child.

Apparently spousal income is figured into her benefits amount. She lied to them about her living situation to keep the amount high. Given the cost of living is what it is, and landlords steal most of their money, who can blame her? Too bad she’s probably a simple woman with some problems and doesn’t have a high price attorney to fight the charges. More of the government misdirecting prosecutorial powers onto the weak, while big business skates by.
Compare this story to the ones where city officials in various towns throughout Iowa steal MILLIONS of dollars from tax funds and receive probation, or 1-3 year sentences. She concealed she was living with her husband whom she was separated from, but not divorced. Not sure why SS would say she was overpaid when their website says this: Any food or shelter you get from someone else that you do not pay for may reduce your SSI benefit. However, we do not reduce your benefit if your spouse who is living with you provides these items. ?? So how could her husband’s income affect her benefits? Strange rules.

WCF article. The presumption of why she hid her living status is because her husband’s income would be taken into account, presumably lowering what she received. But since SS’s own rules state he could provide for her and it wouldn’t dock her…not sure why she did lie. But what’s really of concern is why Social Security would prosecute her rather than just withhold the money for her future benefits. Sounds like a Conservative witch hunt to me.

And former Iowa County Treasurer Kimberly Tanke was given probation and deferred judgment for stealing $62,000 from County fund…and you can read about dozens more similar stories where city officials get slap on the wrist for stealing hundreds of thousands…not to mention former bank clerks. But yeah, please throw this disabled woman in prison for 5 years for “hiding” information when the damn SSA could have been more proactive to check up on…

Plus, SS has the ability to withhold money from her future benefits to pay themselves back the overpayment. Not sure what this woman’s disability was, but many disabled people are struggling on peanuts SSA gives them when slumlords steal upwards of 70% of their checks. His retirement package – $58 million. Boeing subsidies from the state of Washington – $8.7 Billion from 2013 until 2040. Boeing also got between $7-9 billion in bailout money from the govt in 2009. In 2010, boeing spent over $13 million lobbying for its own interests. No criminals here though.

He has given away more welfare than anyone else, but yet black crime continues to rise.
