NIT opinion –

Scott Tornquist blew his stack Monday night at a Mason City business – something he has done before – after he became furious that a citizen called him out for hiding like a scared rabbit from his last election opponent.

Details started to flow into the NIT newsroom late Tuesday and sources are confirming Scott Tornquist’s latest meltdown. For some background, some say Tornquist has a temper like Mount Vesuvius – and is about as unstable.  He once erupted on a citizen at a Hardee’s restaurant when he was asked why Mason City keeps losing population while Tornquist has been in office.  He told that person to leave town.  Tournquist also used profanity at a city council meeting in 2012 (“I’ll throw your ass out”) while picking on a woman for speaking at the public podium.  Minutes later, his yellow streak surfaced and he stood up and ran out of the meeting before it was over.

Apparently, the fact that Scott Tornquist ducked Leonard Foster in the 2013 council election is a touchy subject for the at-large councilman, and he had another one of his episodes while sitting in a bar Monday night.

But why?  After all, Tornquist won the election; his dirty trick worked.  Yet, something is eating away at him, and he just can’t let it go.

Could it be that deep down, Tornquist knows that Mr. Foster would have drubbed him in a debate?  That Mr. Foster would have humiliated him on the facts?  That folks might have cheered for the words coming out of Mr. Foster’s mouth, and jeered and sneered at Tornquist?  Does he taste the vitriol in the community toward him from the majority of citizens, and was that enough of a clue for him to decide to appear only on expensive billboards in that election?

Perhaps those possibilities bother Tornquist.  Maybe doesn’t sleep well at night because of that.  Perhaps he realizes that those scenarios would have manifested themselves if he had attended a debate, and that the humiliation would have been too much for his fragile ego to bear.

But there’s a safer bet out there.

ChickensYou see, when a man’s manhood is put to the test, and he fails miserably, that has a tendency to gnaw at the conscience.  And not very deep down, Tornquist knows, he got called out to debate in an election; to debate a former elected council member, a man who had just lost his wife, but yet was willing to go toe to toe.  And Tornquist chose to be a coward and hide.  That’s not what a real man does, and Scott Tornquist is coming to grips with that every time people bring it up.  Perhaps he took solace in the fact that two other “men” – Eric Bookmeyer and Travis Hickey – were also cowards during that election, while his cohort Janet Solberg scurried like a roach when the lights get turned on.  Maybe their combined actions made him feel – for a brief moment –  that his machismo could survive.  Birds of a feather flock together, so they say.

But it’s been almost two years now, and the wounds are deep for Tornquist; the scab has not healed.  You see, you can win an election… but people forget about that.  What they don’t forget about is the legacy you leave behind, your traces, who and what you reveal yourself to be.

Scott Tornquist, you refused to face your opponent in a debate.  Sources say Monday night you blame your email for that.  You even blame NIT.  But, what you need to do, is walk into your bathroom, stand in front of the mirror and look deep within yourself. Are you proud of the milquetoast, milksop that is staring back at you?

Evidently, not.

Peter I have two questions for you.1) What exactly does “blow your top” mean? Did he yell, scream, swear or hit someone? Or did he maybe just raise his voice and say “leave me alone”.? We would like to know. 2)How is the recall/impeach the mayor program coming along? Have you posted the requisite bond yet? Have you gotten the 4 signatures? Have you at least contacted the attorney generals office? I,and I’m sure everyone else, would like to know.

Don’t you just love this little alien. We all know he loses it, hope to catch it sometime. I only hope he speaks faster when he’s having a tantrum vs the droning monotone crap he pukes out ever so slowly.
Mason City do you get it yet?

What a blow hard. Wonder if he wears a hard hat when hes in Bookies office. Wouldn’t want to skin up that buffed shined forehead. OUCH!!!!!

As far as him being approached in public, that’s part of being a public official. Ask Adam Frederick how many times people stop him in public to complain about the weather. It goes with the job.

AND, it’s how you handle it. Let’s say Adam says, “F*ck you and your high pressure system!” Now, he’d never do that, he usually laughs, has a quip and moves on. I don’t suggest that Tournquist laugh and say something smart, but addressing it and moving on might be the smart thing to do. Blowing your top just leaves you open for more prodding.

Well said.

Isn’t it kind of sad that Peter has resorted to writing anonymous opinions. Isn’t this the guy that berated me and almost every other poster on this site for not using their real name?

I don’t think you are right BUT my criticism would apply to Matt too, IF in fact this is his writing.

I’m curious as to what bar he was at, how much did he have to drink, and did he drive his vehicle after drinking? Because everyone knows that the mayor, and his council are exempt from ever getting pulled over after drinking. The laws don’t apply to EVERYONE in Mason City.

And was he at LD’s for the council listening post or was he just hanging out at the bar?

This sure smacks of Peter writing this opinion. Then giving himself a thumbs up. Hey Pete, don’t hurt your arm patting yourself on the back.

@Reggie-I agree. It does look like Peter’s writing style. I don’t know how much difference that makes on the issue of the article. Tornquist is known for having a short fuse and he really comes across as thinking he is smarter than the rest of the world. I don’t know the details of this incident but I could certainly see it happening.

LVS; Let’s discuss the issue of the article.Supposedly Scott “blew his stack”. What exactly does that mean. When someone “called him out at a Mason City Business”. If I was out minding my own business and someone came over and started berating me, I too would not take kindly to it. How about you? He used profanity at a council meeting saying “I’ll throw your ass out”. On a scale of 1-10 with the f—bomb being a 10 and dick being a 1 I’d say “ass” is a 1 1/4. Is this ground breaking…

news. I don’t think so. Shame on you Peter.

@Reggie-I will agree that jumping anyone in a bar is bad form. There are places to conduct business and that is not one of them. If they had a issue with him they should call him or see him at the council meeting. When someone is off duty it means just that. Now, all that being said, we would expect our councilman to be able to control his temper in public. Not sure I could control mine but he should.

I see NIT has now hired a full time psychologist to spew their anti city council agenda. So glad l read this instead of the funnies!

There’s no place in Government for some one who can’t control their anger. How sad for an elected official.

So cutting thru all the blah, blah, blah what did Scotty actually say or do to make this news worthy?

Perfectly put!

I always felt that this guy was unstable, that his elevator didn’t go all the way to the top. He is the perfect type to explode at any minute.

So where did this aledgedly happen??

Ditto. A well researched and professionally written story would have answered your question and provided other relevant facts. Opinion YES, News NO.
