BETTENDORF – NIACC’s Trey Simons and Hannah Palmeter both won individual titles at the St. Ambrose Fighting Bee Invitational on Saturday.
The NIACC men won the overall team title and the junior college division with 58 points and the NIACC women placed fifth overall and were the junior college champions with 126 points.
In the men’s race, Simons, a freshman, set the course and school record in the 8-kilometer race in a time of 25 minutes, 24 seconds to lead the Trojans. The old school record was 25:32 by Jimmy Lanik in 2005.
Next in line for the Trojans was sophomore Jaime Zarate, who was third in a personal best 25:52. Zarate’s time is the ninth fastest 8K time in school history.
Also counting for the Trojans were freshman Imad Amenzou was seventh (personal best, 26:10), freshman Tyler Randall was 17th (personal best, 26:59) and Colby Kraninger was 34th (27:39, matched his personal best).
In the women’s race, Palmeter, a sophomore, won the 5K race in a personal best time of 18:20. St. Ambrose’s Dominique Guianne was a distant second in 19:27.
Palmeter’s previous best 5K time was 18:28.5 at the 2014 ICCAC time trial.
The 18:20 by Palmeter was the second-fastest 5K women’s time in school history. The 5K women’s record is 18:15 by Anna Buenneke in 2011.
Also for NIACC, Nicolle Hewett was 26th (personal best, 21:02), Lattie Crozier was 30th (personal best, 21:15), Alyssa Cowan was 36th (21:30) and Leta Jaquis was 72nd (personal best, 23:10).
