UPDATED: Death, lost cash reported as RAGBRAI departs Mason City

dollars-moneyMASON CITY – A man was found dead, and a large amount of cash was turned in as RAGBRAI left Mason City Thursday.

According to RAGBRAI on social media, Mason City police said a “fairly large amount” of money was turned into the department Thursday morning.  Anyone who wants to claim it can call police at 641-421-3636.

“We aren’t disclosing the amount but it was found in a bathroom at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, they were serving meals as part of RAGBRAI,” Mason City police chief Michael Lashbrook told NIT Thursday. “It was still in the money envelope from the credit union we assume it was withdrawn from. We know the credit union is out of Colorado.”

On a sad note, a 74-year-old man was found dead in his tent as he camped in Parker’s Woods.

“We did have a report this morning, at 5:54 AM, of a man found dead in his tent at Parker’s Woods. His name was George Brinkerfoff of Sioux City, he was 74 years old. His death was not suspicious,” Chief Lashbrook said.

No cause of death has been determined.

63-year-old Tom Teesdale from West Branch died earlier this week as he participated in RAGBRAI.

74 yr old man died in his sleep. Friends discovered him in his tent the next morning when they tried to wake him.

There was a older gentleman on a 3 wheel bike that stopped by here last night looking for directions to Hoover. He was only about 10 blocks off. I told him how to get there without going over the 12th street bridge again. Sure hope it wasn’t him. he was a nice fellow.

Would love to see a photo of the person who was found dead? there was a wonderful old little man dancing and having the time of his life. i have several photos of him having fun.
If this was him, I would really like to reunite these photos with his family.
I Am sure they would cherrish and enjoy them

If that was in fact him, what a beautiful way to pass on to another life. Far better than spending years in a nursing home with oat meal dribbling down your chin. I hope and pray for the same kind of departure, in the saddle and enjoying the ride. Thanks for taking those pictures!

A family member of mine told me about the little old man in the multi colored jumpsuit dancing and having a good time with another older woman last night. Said the crowd was throwing money at them.
