WASHINGTON – US Senator Harry Reid of Nevada wants to engage Republicans in debate on raising the minimum wage one the Senate returns from a week’s recess.

“When the Senate returns, I look forward to a debate on raising the minimum wage. I hope my Republican colleagues will join us to act on it,” Reid said Monday morning.

States across the country are imposing minimum wage raises, with Minnesota being the latest to do so.

Iowa senator Tom Harkin will likely join in such a debate, if it happens. He has been advocating for minimum wage hikes at the federal level over the $10 per hour mark for years.  The current federal minimum wage in the US is $7.25, the same as it is in Iowa, where state legislators have shown no disposition to raising that amount this year.
