MASON CITY – On Monday, September 8th, 18-year-old Cody James Studer was sentenced after pleading guilty to driving while barred and a reduced aggravated misdemeanor count of eluding police.
Originally Studer faced a class D felony count of eluding police, but the charge was reduced as part of a voluntary negotiated plea of guilty to the lessor misdemeanor count of eluding police.
Studer was arrested following a high speed chase from Clear Lake to Mason City which reached speeds over 100 mph as citizens traveled the roadways after work and school on April 24, 2012.
At the scheduled plea change and sentencing hearing presiding District Court Judge Gregg Rosenbladt sentenced Studer to 60 days in county jail for eluding police and 30 days to be served consecutively for driving while barred. Studer was granted work release if qualified.
Additionally Judge Rosenbladt imposed $1250 in fines, $437.50 in surcharges, and $180 dollars in court costs totaling $1867.50. Studer was granted a $100 a month payment plan.
The Iowa Department of Transportation sanctions call for the barring of Studer’s privileges to operate a motor vehicle for no less than 6 years when the new convictions are added to the 5 driving while suspended convictions he has received in the past year in multiple counties.
Multiple other offenses related to the chase appear on online records as awaiting further court proceedings. It is unclear rather they will be dismissed as part of the plea bargain agreement with the county attorney’s office. Those offenses include; possession of drug paraphernalia, speeding 20+ over posted speed limit, wreckless driving, no valid driver’s license, failure to yield to emergency vehicle, no sr-22 insurance, and driving while suspended or revoked.
Cody Studer, as of Tuesday morning, had not turned himself over to the custody of the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff to serve his sentence. Typically a defendant has 30 days from the date of conviction to start serving their jail sentence.

He DID have a valid work permit. If you get convicted of any NEW driving offenses once you have a work permit they pull it. He was just convicted of the driving while barred charge, meaning he now has a NEW driving offense. Anytime you see him driving call him in, not only will they determine his status they will have a chance to take his newest pot pipe away. Seems like every time we pull him over they get him for something.
