Follow up: Debris on ground and sidewalk, take caution

514 South Federal Avenue on Friday evening. Debris on the parking area and sidewalk, left over the weekend.

MASON CITY – NIT reported Thursday that a building at 514 South Federal Avenue has debris falling off it and might not be safe to be near.

“Can the city please cleanup the mess in the parking area next to the Old Pizza Hut Delivery,” an NIT reader posted in the our Whiner’s Den.  “Someone is gonna get hurt from falling bricks.”

After we reported the issue to City Hall, Neighborhood Services Manager Pat Otto promptly let NIT know that her team was taking care of the situation saying that the property owner was going to place barricades at the location to protect pedestrians and people who might park next to the building.

The property owner (listed in online records as TIERNEY HOLDINGS LLC) did place the barricades with caution tape later that day.

However, as a photo from Friday afternoon shows, there is a lot of debris on the ground and some of it is on the public sidewalk.  This is a potential safety hazard for pedestrians.  Furthermore, debris may still be falling off the building.

Pedestrians should continue to take caution when near this structure.

Readers may report any similar issues to NIT for follow up.

Debris on sidewalk and large amount of debris in parking area creating a potentially dangerous situation for pedestrians and an eyesore on one of the busiest streets in Mason City.

Tierney Holdings? That wouldn’t be the same as Jeff Tierney, the landlord who constantly is in the news for having problems at his properties… ie drugs, 11 people fighting, underage drinking

Does this landlord have a lot of problems with his rentals? If he does, well great!! Ding Ding we have a winner!! Thank you for the great contribution to our city!!! We all really appreciate it. What’s a little income if others (like good neighbors in the area) have to suffer a little bit? I mean income is income right? A guys gotta make a living. Please carry on and hold your head high.

Maybe the city could buy the building, or trade for it like they did the buildings in the 200 block of 2nd south west. Those are also some nice buildings previously owned by TIERNEY HOLDINGS LLC.

Just tear it down!

The solution to everthing…. tear it down. Let’s just bulldoze the whole downtown, and replace them with your favorite type of building, pole sheds. Nothing says we don’t care about our community more than a town full of plastic buildings. It reflects the cheap and throw-away attitudes of those who desire them.

Then they wonder why no one wants to invest in the City.

The story is, Jeff only just recently bought the building in its excisting condition a month ago from Gary Price. Now a company (I won’t mention who) wants to build here and is interested in that building and has made inquiries on that building vs another lot in town. Who would put money into fixing up a building that may get torn down?
