NIACC is Increasing Offerings for GED and ESL Classes

MASON CITY – North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) is increasing the days and times that GED and ESL classes are offered in several North Iowa communities this fall.

General Education Development (GED) teaches skills and knowledge equivalent to a high school course of study in Mathematics; Reading; Writing; Science; and Social Studies. Instructors assist persons with their individual needs and classes are tailored to what students want and need to know to pass their GED tests.

English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are student-centered and communication-based. Oral communication for life situations is the foremost goal followed by correct grammar, spelling, and pronunciation. Curriculum is flexible and based on individual needs.

“Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and educational levels,” said NIACC Adult Literacy Coordinator Mary Schultz. “Some are seeking their GED while others have their Master’s Degree, but desire to improve their English speaking, writing and/or grammar skills.”

Students must be 17 years of age and not enrolled in high school in order to be in the Adult Literacy program.

Employment goals for students include being able to complete forms, enter the job market for the first time, move up the employment ladder, or find employment after the closing of a long-term position. For others the goal is to increase their educational skills so they transition into college. Adult literacy classes help students achieve their goals.

“These new schedules offer more flexibility and hours for our students,” Schultz said.
