Democrats kick-off campaign season in North Iowa

by Jody Spear –

MASON CITY -The Cerro Gordo County Democratic Party Headquarters held a grand opening Monday at 5:30 PM at 219 North Federal Ave.

There was a potluck with pulled pork, ham and turkey, salads, side dishes and finger food.

Among those who spoke were Senator Amanda Ragan, Representative Sharon Steckman, Cerro Gordo County Supervisor Phil Dougherty, Dean Genth (pictured, top; on behalf of Cristie Vilsack) and Brad Anderson (a President Obmama staffer) along with volunteers to help campaign for Obama in the upcoming election this fall.

After the speakers were done, people split into groups and practiced how to campaign. One lady was heard saying, “It shouldn’t take much to persuade people to vote for Obama.”

It was a very good turn out. The room was full (and hot). Steckman said, “They have it at 60 degrees in here, but with all these people it makes it hot.” All the chairs were full and there were also people standing.

Brad Anderson joked a little about the building being beside a business that says “Cocktails.”

The room had many pictures of Obama, Vilsack, Steckman and Ragan and others along with a huge American flag. They were giving out stickers with Obama’s issues printed on them.

Pete, I don’t think a animal abuse registry would help that much. People that are abusing animals wouldn’t be shamed by the fact they would be on it, that’s just not in their logic. Sorry, I just don’t see it as a deterent. I beleive pets are required to have shots and be registered already, so it could be helpful to have a bill that says if you are convicted of abusing an animal you are not allowed to have another one registered. I’m not sure if that is already a law or city code or not but it could be something you could look into.

And the jackasses are off and running!

Peter L FOR government control…

I love animals too!! Vote for me Peter!

Damn Peter-with all the problems facing this world is this all you can come up with. “People” are being killed and abused every day and I would think that would be a priority for our governments. We already have organizations like PETA that are dedicated to protecting animals and we already have laws to do that. That is the problem with you Dem’s, you want a law to cover everything when the rest of us want freedom from government. Grow up and handle your own issues.

I’m a card carrying – tax hating republican and I am also for an animal abuse registry. It doesn’t have anything to do with politics.

Peter-I am just saying there are many other issues I would rather see our politicians do than a animal cruelty registry. Once you have it you have to maintain it and that is costly. Besides that you have the court time required and our courts are already overloaded. The guy has a animal cruelty charge against him now and that is how it should be. If convicted (and I don’t know why he wouldn’t be) he will get jail time (at least he should) and it will be on his criminal record for all to see as it will be a matter of public record. It just seems that what you are proposing is duplication. I also am a animal lover and if I had my way we would lock the A-Hole up for a long time. Just saying.

I guess we will agree to disagree on this issue. To bad as I am right and you are wrong again.
