Sanitation: Large item pick up starts this week in Mason City

MASON CITY – City of Mason City Sanitation customers are advised the city will be conducting Spring Clean-Up Days the week of June 4 through June 8.  During this week, customers are allowed to set out large items not normally collected by the city.

Customers should place their large items at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the same day they normally set out their garbage and recyclables.

Sanitation stickers are required to be attached to all large items placed at the curb.  Stickers cost $1.00 each and are available in sheets of five at most grocery stores and City Hall.

In general, the following number of stickers must be attached to the respective or similar items:

13 – Pianos, large appliances such as stoves, refrigerators (IMPORTANT: doors must be removed), water heaters, trash compactors, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, dishwashers, washers, dryers, freezers, furnaces, televisions, computer monitors, and microwaves

5 – Upholstered furniture such as sofas, chairs, and carpet

4 – Copy machines, fax machines, and any other items with toner cartridges

3 – Sinks, tubs, and toilets

1 – Tables and chairs

Small appliances such as radios

Mattresses and box springs

Grills

Bicycles

Old construction material

Humidifiers

All other electronics, including computer towers, etc.

Customers are reminded not to place items in cardboard boxes because it is recyclable and is not accepted at the landfill.  Old construction material must be bundled and weigh under 50 pounds per bundle or bag.

Smaller items must be bundled or bagged. Loose small items will not be picked up.

Items that will not be picked up include: new construction material, oil, paints, solvents, gasoline, car batteries, gas tanks, tires, household chemicals, toxic items, fuels, and pesticides.

This pickup is for Mason City Sanitation regular customers only.  No businesses will be included.

Customers are encouraged to write their address on the face of each sticker to prevent unauthorized removal.  Pickup crews will be checking to be certain that addresses match the tags. Place stickers on trash as late as possible and, wherever possible, loop stickers through or around openings or appliance electrical cords so that the end of the stickers adhere together.

For further information, contact the Sanitation Division at 421-3691 or the Operations & Maintenance Department at 421-3675.

dmuuni, Nothing in this article is talking about wages, it’s talking about the large item pickup. I think your on the wrong story. But since you commented about it, how is working 40 hours a week for 40 hours of pay, going to save any money?

Example:
40 hours per (week) @ $10.00 per hour = $400.00
40 hours of (pay) @ $10.00 per hour = $400.00

On my calculator it comes out the same, ofcourse I haven’t been schooled on the new math, so maybe you could be correct.

You are correct–they are paid $20 x 40 hours = $800 a week regardless of whether they work the 40 hours or the 26 hours they actually are. I guess I am thinking that 12 workers working 26 hours a week equates to 312 hours. If we divide the 312 hours actually worked by 40 hours a week, we should be able to get by with just 8 employees.

If we downsize by 4 employees, the City of Mason City saves $3200 a week or over $160,000 a year. That seems a significant savings.

This whole conversation could be stopped by the workers agreeing to work 40 hours a week for 40 hours pay.

This great service should be included when the city council decides about keeping sanitation service in Mason City. Did everyone notice the globes story did not include any rates other cities are charging for sanitation service . There is a reason for that, because they are all higher then River City.

You better believe those other communities are higher. Not to say that if the City is able to isolate every cost of our current scheme, it might be as high, what we are charged now is a very good deal.

Others here have said it better than I, but it bares repeating. If the council decides to outsource refuse collection in Mason City, the service may not be as good, and for sure, the rates will increase within a few years after the contract is issued.

And such a move would be another step further to destabilize the average earnings in town. Just what we do not need right now! Just talk to the 12 families involved and ask them what the current mood is.

It gives the appearance that for the people who represent us, a $9 an hour job with no benefits is better than the current wages paid to City employees. If they think that is progress, if it really helps our community, they are dead wrong!

I was within a few hours time, able to look up rates charged to customers all over the country, the Mid-West, and Iowa. It aint that hard to do in an age of information. And yes, RU, the rates are higher. And as I proved, with private contractors, they were much higher than with municipal employees.

We know for a fact, that the wages and benefits paid to city employees are pretty good. We also know as fact, that contractors are not compensated nearly as well. To the point with some companies, the employees probably could not even afford their own home, or be as productive in our economy. And you already see what that can do to an economy.

If council thinks the destabilization of wages in the community is the right way direction to follow, they are dead wrong.

Yes another service that the sanitation department does for the community. And yes, another reason to keep these department just as it is.
