College Wrestling: UNI falls to South Dakota State on the road, 27-13

BROOKINGS, S.D. – UNI wrestling’s Parker Keckeisen moved up a weight to pin his opponent and hand him his first dual loss of the year, but it wasn’t enough to get the team win over South Dakota State.

In dual that saw a new Panther in the lineup and three others move up a weight, No. 22 UNI slipped to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the Big 12 with a 27-13 loss to South Dakota State (5-1 / 1-0 Big 12).

UNI got wins from Kyle Biscoglia at 133 pounds, Derek Holschlag at 157 pounds and Keckeisen at 197 pounds. Biscoglia earned his eighth bonus-point win of the season, and Holschlag earned his second dual win of the season and his second Big 12 career dual win. In extra matches, Colin Realbuto got wins at 149 pounds and 157 pounds.

Kyle Gollhofer entered the Panther lineup for the first time in his career. He opened the dual at 125 pounds with a 4-3 loss to Tanner Jordan, who Gollhofer beat last season. With no scoring after the first period, Jordan built up nearly two minutes of riding time before Gollhofer scored two points off a reversal just four seconds before the second period ended. Gollhofer notched an escape and a takedown to secure his riding time in the third period. A Gollhofer escape wasn’t enough to overcome the riding time and gave SDSU the 3-0 team lead.

At 133 pounds, No. 33 Biscoglia faced Caleb Gross, who Biscoglia beat in the opening tournament of this year in a 4-1 decision. Biscoglia scored first with a takedown, but Gross evened it up with a reversal. Midway through the first Biscoglia escaped and went up 5-2 with his second takedown of the match. Biscoglia earned four backpoints and tallied two minutes of riding time, securing the extra point heading into the final period and leading 9-2. His riding time point gave him his eighth bonus point win of the season with the 10-2 major decision and team lead, 4-3. Biscoglia also earned a major decision in an extra match with Job Greenwood of Wyoming. He is now 11-6 overall, with nine bonus point wins.

141 pounds, No. 31 Cael Happel faced All-American No. 11 Clay Carlson, a two-time NCAA qualifier who took eighth last year at the championships. Carlson notched a takedown but didn’t keep Happel down long before Happel escaped. A final Carlson takedown ended the first period with Carlson leading 4-1 with 40 seconds of riding time. Happel escaped early in the second period with 1:30 left in the second period to close the scoring gap, 4-2. A final second takedown gave Carlson the 6-2 lead to open the third, and Carlson made it 7-2 with an escape off the whistle in the third period. Happel grabbed another takedown, but Carlson escaped with 1:15 left in the match to continue to lead, 8-4. A fourth and final takedown with 30 seconds left in the match and riding time gave Carlson the 11-4 win.

South Dakota State regained the lead, 6-4.

Triston Lara picked up the first two points in the second period of the 149-pound bout with a reversal on Daniel Kimball. Midway through the second, Kimball closed in with an escape. Lara grabbed another takedown but released Kimball, but he kept the 4-2 lead to open the third period. Kimball popped up off the whistle and earned a takedown with 30 seconds left in the match to go up 5-4. Back points pushed Kimball ahead 9-4. Lara got a final escape, but Kimball won 9-5, extending South Dakota State’s lead, 9-4.

Derek Holschlag got the early lead with a first-period takedown and reversal in the second period of the 157-pound match. He drew a stall warning and released Kenny O’Neil in the second period to go up 5-1 at the end of the second period. He locked up riding time early in the third period and drew a final penalty point to win 7-1. It was the second win Holschlag had over O’Neil this season.

UNI closed in on scoring, 9-7.

Cayd Lara stepped in at 165 pounds for the second time this season. Normally wrestling at 157 pounds, Cayd Lara faced No. 29 Tanner Cook. SDSU got a body lock on Lara, pinning the Panther in 1 minute, 26 seconds. SDSU went ahead 15-7.

Pat Schoenfelder fell behind early after No. 11 Cade DeVos notched two takedowns at 174 pounds. He cut Schoenfelder twice to keep it 4-2 midway through the first period. DeVos started down after an injury timeout and picked up a point off the escape and led 5-2 to start the second period. An escape off the whistle and follow-up takedown gave DeVos the 8-2 lead early in the second period. Schoenfelder earned a third escape and chose down to trail 8-3 in the final period. A fourth escape and takedown closed the scoring gap, 8-6, but Schoenfelder cut DeVos right away. DeVos’ riding time gave him the 10-6 decision.

SDSU went ahead 18-7.

Dajun Johnson also wrestled up a weight to fill in at 184 pounds and was pinned in 1:56 by Cade King, securing the team win, leading 24-7.

Parker Keckeisen, ranked fourth at 184 pounds, moved up to 197 pounds and gave SDSU’s Nick Casperson his first dual loss of the season. This was the second time in Keckeisen’s career that he wrestled up a weight. He grabbed three takedowns in the first period to lead 6-2 after the first period. Keckeisen continued to fire away in the second, drawing a stall call on Casperson and another takedown before getting the fall in 4:12. Keckeisen’s only two career losses continue to be from No. 1 Aaron Brooks of Penn State as he improved to 12-1 on the season and 30-2 in his career.

SDSU continued to lead, 24-13.

At heavyweight, No. 24 A.J. Nevills opened the lead with a takedown, but UNI’s Tyrell Gordon was able to tie it up in the third at 2-2 off his second escape. Nevills secured the 4-2 decision with 15 seconds left in the match. A final escape pulled Nevills within one, but SDSU took the final match, 4-3, and the dual, 27-13.
