Shots fired at car in Mason City, leading to search of house by Special Operations unit

MASON CITY – Mason City police say there were gunshots directed at a car, leading to a search of a house.

At 11:31 PM on January 18, 2020, a subject drove to the Mason City Police Department and reported a unknown person discharged a firearm into the car he was driving. The person alleges one or more unknown subjects shot his vehicle while he was stopped near 1st Street and North Madison Ave to talk to the unknown multiple subjects.

Police confirm there was at least 1 round fired into the car. There are no confirmed reports of any injuries. Police cannot confirm the reporter was operating the car when the incident occurred, where, or when the incident occurred. Police did apply for and obtain a search warrant for a residence located at 16 North Madison. Due to the person’s report of multiple subjects with a firearm, the North Iowa Special Operations Group (SOG) was activated to serve the search warrant. No one was located inside the residence Sunday morning.

The case is under investigation, police say. The police department is asking anyone who may have witnessed anything related to this report that allegedly occurred at 1st and N Madison between 11-11:30 pm on Jan 18, to contact the Mason City Police Department. The information obtained so far does not indicate the public is at risk, nor is it related to the robbery that was reported on January 17 in the 500 block of 6th Street SE.
