From April 16 – 30 cleanup teams are asked to collect trash in designated areas of Mason City. Businesses, organizations, families of all sizes, and individuals are encouraged to be part of a team. Garbage bags and gloves will be provided for teams and disposal of trash will be handled by the City Sanitation Dept.

Last year over 500 volunteers spent a total of 975 hours cleaning up Mason City, collecting 3.5 tons of trash!
The Mason City Earth Day Festival will be held at the Lime Creek Nature Center just north of Mason City on Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m. – Noon. It will feature food, music, educational booths and Earth Day-related activities for persons of all ages, according to Missy Nicholson, Earth Day Committee Chair. Tree seedlings will be given away to youth, and several prizes will be awarded to cleanup teams and individuals at the end of the festival.

This is fantastic yearly event! This is all well and good but how about investing some money towards new trash cans and recycling receptacles for the entire city? For example, one trash can for both the (Lester Milligan Park and Zerble’s Pond) black pit and big blue during the winter months. And, none at the shelter is just plain stupid, in my opinion. No wonder people just toss out their trash because there is no place to dispose of it properly. A lot of people go to parks throughout the day and over their lunch hours even during the winter months. And, I might add that at Rory Skate Park they have one trash bin but those that utilize the park choose to toss their trash on the ground. The trash gets blown all over the area. How about some park rules at the Rory Skate Park and someone from the drug task force stationed there to fine the litter bugs, as well as, help eliminate the serious drug abuse that’s going on there? Now that would be so beneficial. Moreover, it’s almost comical that there are plenty of dog poop recycle bins. Mind you, I am thankful for them, but I feel, it gives off the appearance that MC is more concerned over dog poop which is biodegradable and organic, than all the plastics and assorted trash that are just tossed. Where is the Blue Zone committee on this? Isn’t a clean environment also a healthy one?

I agree. I walk my dog at Big Blue quite often and it is such a mess. But there are hardly any garbage cans in the areas where people usually are.
Plus there’s obvious signs of dumping going on there too. In the lower area parking lot next to the shelter house, there’s always junk piles and random garbage that doesn’t have any place in a park.
The skate park has broken glass all the time, cigarette butts and empty soda bottles all over.
Littering is like the one thing that people can easily control but they’re too damn lazy. It’s pathetic really.
