MASON CITY – A man was found dead today by his bicycle in a yard in this troubled Mason City neighborhood.
Mason City police say that on April 9, 2026, at approximately 6:07 AM, a caller reported an unresponsive male lying in the yard near a bicycle on the ground close to the intersection of 6th Place Southeast and South Jersey Avenue in Mason City, Iowa. Personnel from the Mason City Fire and Police departments responded to the scene. Upon arrival, it was determined the male was deceased.
The deceased, a 50-year-old resident of Mason City, has not been publicly identified.
At this time, no foul play is suspected, police claim, and more details will be released as early as Friday.
The State Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy on the deceased.
Less than two weeks ago in the same vicinity, Cory Lee Craig barricaded himself inside a house and refused to come out, leading police to establish a secure perimeter. Police Chief Mike McKelvey took the unusual step of requesting a “shelter-in-place” advisory for the immediate area of the 200 block of 8th Street SE, warning the public to stay away so officers could concentrate on the volatile scene. Craig was eventually nabbed on a swath of charges (and remains in jail now), allowing startled residents to return to normalcy.
