MASON CITY — Residents of a Southeast Mason City neighborhood were met with an early morning emergency on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, as a house fire forced local occupants to evacuate their home.
The Mason City Fire Department was dispatched to the residence at 825 12th Street SE at approximately 7:24 a.m. following reports of a fire visible on one side of the structure. Upon arrival, fire crews were relieved to find that all occupants had safely exited the building and were accounted for outside.
Firefighters moved quickly to contain the blaze, which was found concentrated on the exterior of the home near the back door. While the interior of the house was spared from active flames, it had filled with light smoke. Crews worked to ventilate the living spaces and took the precautionary step of removing sections of the home’s aluminum siding to ensure the fire had not extended into the walls.
Following an investigation into the origin of the blaze, fire officials determined the cause to be unintentional. The fire was sparked by the improper disposal of smoking materials near the exterior of the residence.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported to either the residents or responding emergency personnel. While the home suffered some exterior damage and smoke infiltration, the occupants are currently displaced and staying with family members.
The Mason City Fire Department remained on the scene for nearly two hours, officially clearing at 9:23 a.m. The department was assisted during the incident by the Mason City Police Department, Alliant Energy, and City Building and Electrical Inspectors.
