William A. “Bill” Gumm, 81, of Westgate, Iowa, died Monday evening, December 22, 2025, at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital in West Union, Iowa.

Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein, Iowa with Rev. Kent Peck officiating.
Visitation: 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. Monday, December 29, 2025, and for one hour before the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Interment: St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery, Westgate, with military honors by the Messerer-Fox American Legion Post #92 Honor Guard of Westgate.

William Albert Gumm was born September 16, 1944, in Oelwein, the son of Albert August “Abbie” and Maxine Elaine (Bonovsky) Gumm. In 1962, he graduated from Maynard High School in Maynard, Iowa. Bill proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. On May 20, 1972, he was united in marriage to Alice Ann Fortsch in Readlyn, Iowa. They later divorced, however remained close friends. Bill farmed in the Westgate and West Union areas. He also worked for Paul Nieman Construction in Sumner, where he retired. He was a member of the Messerer-Fox American Legion Post #92 of Westgate, where for many years he served on the honor guard. Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing and trap shooting.

Bill is survived by his 4 children: Kim (Rod) Eckhoff of Oelwein, Annette (Larry) West of West Union, Lori Buehler of Westgate and Kennon (Katie) Gumm of West Union; 13 grandchildren: Andrea (Brad) Kadera, Heather Soll, Craig Soll, Scott Soll, Madilin Eckhoff, Carson Eckhoff, Alesha (Galen) McShane, Jason (Rebecca) West, Lyle (Valarie) Buehler, LaRae (Justin) O’Brien, Jamie Vargason, Collin Gumm and Caleb Gumm; and 17 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; ex-wife: Alice Gumm; son-in-law: Jim Buehler; granddaughter: Jordynn Eschweiler; and 2 sisters: Pamela Gumm at infancy and Mary Hurd.
