IOWA CITY – The Black team took Game 1 of the University of Iowa baseball team’s annual Black and Gold World Series, winning 5-1 in a seven-inning game Wednesday afternoon at Duane Banks Field, and former Newman Knight Max Burt homered for the winning side.
Logan Runde started on the mound and threw five innings of one-run ball, striking out six. Gannon Archer pitched the final two innings for the Black squad and struck out two.
Caleb Wulf led the way for Black with two hits, while Carter Geffre had two RBIs. Jaixen Frost and Mitch Wood each plated a run.
Tyler Guerin started for the Gold team, throwing 2 2/3 innings and striking out two. Justin Hackett and Nick Heitman pitched the final 4 1/3 innings, striking out four and two, respectively.
Matthew Delgado was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
