LEE COUNTY, IOWA – Two Iowa children on an electric bike, or “e-bike”, traveled through a stop sign in a residential neighborhood and were struck by a woman teen driver in a Honda Civic, and both youths were thrown and hurt badly Tuesday, authorities say.

The accident took place in Fort Madison, Iowa, according to a report from the Iowa State Patrol. At 4:44 PM, an electric bike was being operated by a 9-year-old juvenile, with a 12-year-old passenger. The e-bike traveled eastbound through an intersection on town, and failed to stop at a stop sign. The e-bike was struck by a southbound 2020 Honda Civic driven by 19-year-old Jordyn Burch of fort Madison. The electric bike struck the front driver-side area of the Civic, and both children were ejected.

As a result, the 9-year-old operator of the e-bike was airflighted by helicopter to University of Iowa Hospitals, and the 12-year-old passenger was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
