WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa is bowing out of office when her term runs out next year, giving Democrats an honest shot at a coveted Senate seat.
“After a tremendous amount of prayer and reflection, I will not be seeking reelection in 2026,” Joni Ernst said today in a video posted to her social media. Ernst, a Republican, ended months of speculation about her future in making the announcement.
Ernst stated that after prayer and reflection, she decided not to run to spend more time with her aging and growing family. She reflected on her career, which included being the first woman from Iowa elected to the Senate and the first female combat veteran to serve in the chamber.
Ernst affirmed that she will continue to fight for Iowans’ voices in Congress until her term ends. She has been a staunch “MAGA” GOP supporter of President Donald Trump.
Her retirement opens up a Senate seat in Iowa, which has recently trended more Republican and is currently solid-red. The news sets up what could become a competitive race, though some Republicans, like Representative Ashley Hinson, are already seen as potential candidates.
