MASON CITY – A Northern Iowa truck driver struggling to stay awake put his truck in a ditch and collided with a utility pole.

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol responded to a single vehicle accident in the 24000 block of Orchid Avenue, just north of Mason City, on Wednesday afternoon. At 2:08 PM that day, David Richard Falk of Saint Ansgar, Iowa, was driving a silver 2019 Chevy Suburban southbound on Orchid Avenue when he drove into the west ditch and struck a utility pole.

As a result of the collision, the pole was knocked down, and Faulk sustained none-life-threatening injuries. He was transported by private vehicle from the scene.

Authorities say driver fatigue is believed to be a contributing factor in the accident.

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Alliant Energy, and Action Towing.
