GRUNDY COUNTY, IOWA – He blasted out of this tiny town at 93 miles per hour, allegedly drunk again and carrying a weapon, but diligent deputies chased this Northern Iowa suspect into the woods, where everyone emerged with frost bite injuries due to bitter cold temps.
On January 4, 2025, at approximately 2:00 AM, a Grundy county deputy spotted a truck traveling northbound on county road T-19 just coming out of Wellsburg, Iowa, at 93 MPH in a 55 MPH zone. The deputy then turned on his emergency lights and sirens, but the suspect fled, leading the deputy on a pursuit that reached speeds over 100 MPH. The subject also went through stop signs at a high rate of speed.
Due to the very high speeds the deputy lost sight of the vehicle. A perimeter was set up and deputies were able to locate the vehicle in a heavily wooded area and as Deputies approached the vehicle the driver fled on foot. Deputies pursued the suspect and were able to catch the suspect. Both deputies and the driver were transported by ambulance to the Grundy County Memorial Hospital for injuries received in the apprehension of this suspect and to be treated for frost bite. Both deputies were treated and released.
The suspect, 31-year-old Tanner Lee Henning (pictured at top) of Dike, Iowa, was also treated and released to the custody of the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office. Henning is currently be held at the Grundy County Jail and is charged with:
– Eluding (Class D Felony)
– Operating while Intoxicated 3rd Offense (Class D Felony)
– Speeding 93 in 55 and 105 in a 55 (Simple Misdemeanor)
– Interference with official acts causing bodily injury (Class D Felonies, two counts)
– Driving while license suspended (simple misdemeanor, three counts)
– Driving while license revoked for prior OWI (serious misdemeanor)
– Possession of a dangerous weapon while under the influence (serious misdemeanor)
– Driving while suspended no SR-22 Insurance (simple misdemeanor)
– Driving with no ignition interlock device (serious misdemeanor)
– Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (simple misdemeanor)
The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Wellsburg Ambulance, Aplington Ambulance, Grundy County Emergency Management and the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.
