EMMETSBURG – A Northern Iowa man died and three other people were hurt in a two-car crash.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident took place on Friday, August 30, 2024, in Palo Alto County just east of Emmetsburg. At :2:57 PM that afternoon, 32-year-old Desiree Angela Sternhagen of Janesville, Minnesota, was driving a 2013 Kia southbound on 480th Avenue and failed to stop at the intersection with 370th Street. At the same time, 34-year-old Mathia Kay Nieves of Emmetsburg was driving a 2018 Mitsubishi westbound on 370th Street and was struck in the passenger side by the Kia.
As a result of the collision, 67-year-old Ernest Eugene Manwarren of Emmetsburg, who was a passenger in the Mitsubishi and not wearing a seat belt, was fatally injured.
Three others were also hurt: Sternhagen, Nieves and a passenger, 33-year-old Justin Eugene Manwarren of Emmetsburg, were all transported to the Palo Alto Hospital by Palo Alto Ambulance.
