According to a complaint and affidavit released by authorities:

On or about 3:19 am on Thursday, July 4th, 2024, the Taylor County Sheriffs Office received a call regarding a shooting at Bootleggers Bar and Grill, 221 Broadway Street, Clearfield, Taylor County, Iowa, 50840. I, Deputy Pafford, arrived on scene at approximately 3:36 am and observed a subject identified as Colby Dean Nelson (02/08/2005) lying unresponsive on the ground with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head. I, Deputy Pafford observed a subject later identified as Alan James Schultz (12/25/1986) standing against an SUV and near the body of Nelson. I, Deputy Pafford, asked Schultz if he was the shooter and Schultz responded in the affirmative. I, Deputy Pafford detained Shultz and placed him in the rear of my patrol vehicle. EMS arrived on scene after Deputy detained Schultz. EMS personnel assessed Nelson’s condition and did not perform any life saving measures. Nelson was deceased at this time. Schultz was brought to the Taylor County Sheriffs Office. Several eyewitnesses at the scene identified Schultz as the person that shot Nelson. Nelson was interviewed at the Sheriffs Office by a DCI Agent. Schultz admitted to the Agent that he did shoot and kill Nelson. It was learned that Schultz and Nelson had a disagreement in the bar earlier in the night. An argument also took place outside the bar when Schultz went to leave. Schultz left the bar on his motorcycle and traveled to his residence in Bedford, IA. Schultz took a loaded handgun from his residence and drove back to the Bootleggers Bar and Grill in a different vehicle. Schultz exited his vehicle and proceeded to confront Nelson along with several other individuals in the middle of the street in front of Bootleggers Bar and Grill. Schultz walked back to his vehicle and retrieved his handgun from the passenger seat. Schultz walked back across the street and confronted Nelson behind a pickup truck parked in front of the bar. Schultz pointed the gun at Nelson and fired one round striking Nelson in the face Schultz then unloaded his handgun and placed it on the ground. Schultz then waited by his vehicle for deputies to arrive. Schultz willfully, deliberately, and with premeditation killed Nelson when he drove home to Bedford and retrieved a firearm, then drove back to the bar where Nelson was located Schultz retrieved his firearm from his vehicle, then willfully and deliberately shot Nelson once in the face, killing Nelson.
