Edward “Ed” Joseph was born September 6, 1938 in Dougherty, IA the only son of Emil R. and Evelyn (Hogan) Soucek. He graduated from St. Patrick’s School in 1957 and soon after entered the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge, he came back home to Dougherty where he worked for Don Hogan’s corn shelling and gas delivery business. In 1963 he began his 48 year long career with the Iowa Department of Transportation. Over the years he worked on countless projects from field surveys to soil bores and bridge and overpass groundwork. In 2010 Ed retired.

Ed was a quiet yet ever-present figure in the lives of those he loved. Eschewing the spotlight, he found fulfillment in the simple joys of serving others, like crafting personalized cards filled with newspaper clippings and keepsakes to commemorate special occasions. Sundays were often spent quietly preparing these tokens of affection for the week ahead. He was known for never missing a birthday. Ed’s love for sports, particularly football and baseball, was evident in his attendance at numerous Super Bowls, World Series, ski trips to the Alps, Colorado and Utah and even the Olympics. And with every trip came a memorable story. In the excitement of the Super Bowl lottery draws, Ed’s luck shone brightly, gracing him with multiple fortunate wins over the years thanks to the hundreds of postcards sent in family and friends’ names. Along with being a proud member of the Brisling Hogan American Legion, he was also a constant presence at care centers and hospital visits for friends and family. Serving his family and community in any way he could. We can’t forget Ed’s love of music, especially attending Buddy Holly celebrations at the Surf Ballroom with the Dougherty Brothers. Yet, amidst the thrill of sports and the warmth of family, Ed remained a diligent worker, embodying the values of dedication and perseverance. His legacy of faith and hard work serves as a beacon of inspiration for all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Surviving are his extended family, including cousins and their children, and countless friends he made throughout the years.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Emil and Evelyn, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

To honor Ed’s love of sports, please feel free to dress casually and wear your favorite team clothing and Ed will be watching to see if his beloved Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Dodgers are represented!
