CHARLES CITY – A Charles City man was rescued by emergency responders from his Chevy Impala after an elderly driver’s Lexus barreled into his driver’s side door.

Authorities say the accident took place on October 5, 2023. At 6:40 AM that morning, Charles City police, fire, ambulance and the Colwell Fire Department all responded to an accident at Gilbert and Clinton Streets near Kwik Star in Charles City. The Jaws of Life were used to remove the driver’s side door of a Chevy Impala driven by 37-year-old Casey Wenzel of Charles City. The Impala had been struck by a 2022 Lexus driven by 88-year-old William Herbrechtsmeyer of Charles City. EMS was then able to remove the driver from the smashed Impala. Authorities say his injuries were considered non-life threatening.

Damages connected to this collision were estimated at $15,000.

Chatfield’s Towing responded and cleaned the roadway.

Herbrechtsmeyer was cited for failure to yield to vehicle on the right.
