John W. Hurd, 79 of Mason City passed away Saturday, April 22, 2023 at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center.

A gathering to celebrate his life will be held from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2023 at the Moose Lodge, 22 4th St NW, Mason City.

John Wesley Hurd was born July 8, 1943 in Mason City, the son of Carroll and Dorothy (Englet) Hurd. Carroll passed away when John was just eight, and Rex Johnston, his step-dad, raised him as his own. Growing up, John went to school in Manly before moving to Mason City where he graduated in 1961 from Mason City High School. He was a hard worker from an early age, working on local farms from the age 10. On March 17, 1970 he married the love of his life, Karen L. Frank in Sioux Falls, SD and were blessed with two children, Shannon and Travis. The family made their home in Mason City where John worked at Hale-Phipps Motors and later Price Motors for many years. Later in life John worked in insurance, serving North Iowa. In retirement John took pride in transporting guests locally and on countless airport trips working for Odyssey Limousines. He met countless people, and looked forward to caring for his regular clients.

John was a man with a heart of gold. His younger years were filled with golf, family time, and countless road trips with his beloved wife, Karen. He enjoyed his Westerns, spending hours lost in tales of cowboys and outlaws. But more than anything, John cherished the simple things in life, like playing cards, fixing things and chatting over a cold beer with good company. His dependability was unwavering, always willing to lend a helping hand or offer a kind word of advice. Even in his later years, John remained as vibrant as ever, finding joy in the little things, like bingo nights at the Moose Lodge, Sunday breakfasts with friends and driving around town. He dedicated his life to caring for those he loved, and was truly the “BEST” dad and grandpa anyone could ask for.

Those surviving are his two children, Shannon Hurd of Mason City and Travis (Jessica) Hurd of Mason City; two grandchildren, Nolan and Madelyn Hurd; Karens’ siblings, Tom (Robee) Frank, Kathy (Greg) Keeling and Kristie (Mike) Stadtlander; brother-in-law, Jack Ford; dear friend, Nancy Sliger; and many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Preceding him in death are his wife, Karen; mother, Dorothy Hurd-Johnston; father, Carroll Hurd; step-father, Rex Johnston; siblings, Carolyn Chapman, Sandra Ford, and C.W. “Cory” Hurd; and uncle, John “Wesley” Hurd.
