Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is an essential tool that we use to protect ourselves from hazards in the workplace or during activities that require protective gear. PPE can include items like helmets, gloves, goggles, masks, and many others. In this post, we’ll explore the proper way to use PPE and ensure that you are getting the necessary protection from it.

Why is Proper PPE Usage Important?

The proper use of PPE is critical in preventing injury or illness from hazards in the workplace or during activities. PPE serves as a barrier between you and potential hazards, reducing your exposure to them. Without the correct PPE usage, you risk exposing yourself to harmful chemicals, infectious diseases, and physical injuries such as cuts and burns.

Choosing the Right PPE

Before using PPE, it’s important to select the appropriate gear for the job. Different jobs require different types of PPE, and choosing the wrong gear can result in inadequate protection. PPE suppliers can help you find the right gear for the job. For example, if you are working with chemicals, you need to use chemical-resistant gloves and goggles. On the other hand, you’ll need a welding helmet and gloves if you’re welding as part of your job.

Putting on PPE

Once you have chosen the right PPE for the job, it’s time to put it on. This process can vary depending on the type of gear that you are using. However, some general guidelines will apply to the majority of PPE. Firstly, ensure that your PPE is clean and in good condition. Check for any tears, holes, or signs of wear and tear. Damage or wear to PPE can compromise its protective capabilities.

Next, put your PPE on in the correct order. For example, if you are wearing a full body suit, put it on before putting on gloves and boots. Make sure that your PPE fits correctly and is comfortable to wear. If you are wearing gear that is too tight or too loose, it can impair your movement or leave gaps that allow hazards to get through.

Using PPE Properly

Proper PPE usage extends beyond simply putting it on. You will need to use it correctly throughout the duration of the task. This means that you need to ensure your PPE is properly adjusted and in place before you begin working. For example, if you are wearing a mask, make sure that it is fitted correctly to your face and that the straps are secured well.

It is also important to use PPE in conjunction with other safety measures, and it should not be your only line of defence against hazards. Use PPE alongside other measures such as engineering controls, administrative controls, and safe work practices

Removing PPE

Once you have completed your work, it’s important to know the right process for removing your PPE safety. Improper removal of PPE can result in exposure to hazards that you were trying to protective yourself from. PPE should be removed in the correct order, starting with gloves, then the face shield or protective eyewear, followed by your respirator or mask. Then, remove any body wear, before finally removing shoes or boots.

PPE is a crucial tool to protect yourself from hazards. By understanding how to use and wear it correctly, you can ensure its effectiveness.
