Cops shoot man in Cedar Rapids after foot chase; suspect stabbed two women, killing one

CEDAR RAPIDS – Cops shot a man in Cedar Rapids after an emergency call and foot chase as the suspect stabbed two women, killing one.

At 1:46 AM on Saturday, February 20, the Cedar Rapids Joint Communication Agency received a report of a disturbance at the Rodeway Inn located at 4011 16th Ave SW in Cedar Rapids.

At the time of the 911 call, a uniformed Cedar Rapids police officer was in the area on routine patrol and quickly responded. Inside the motel, the officer was met by two adult females with apparent knife wounds. The women directed the officer to a man running from the motel. The officer gave chase and during an encounter, the officer fired shots, striking the man. Medical attention was provided and the man was transported to a local hospital. The extent of his injuries are not known. The officer was not injured.

Additional responding officers and medical service personnel provided medical attention to the two females, who were each transported to a local hospital. One of the females died at the hospital. The extent of the injuries to the other is not being released at this time.

There is a known link between the man shot and the female victims.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department (CPRD) is investigating the woman’s death as a homicide.

At the request of CRPD, the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), Major Crime Unit, is conducting an independent investigation into the circumstances which led to the officer-involved shooting.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department has identified the February 20, 2021, homicide victim as Katrina Latrese Brinson, age 34, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner performed Brinson’s autopsy this morning, ruling her manner of death as a homicide and the cause of death as sharp-edged trauma.

A second female, age 32, also was stabbed during this incident. She was transported to a local hospital where she was treated and released. The on-going investigation includes her assault by the suspect.

The name of the suspect shot by a Cedar Rapids police officer is being withheld; pending notification of the suspect’s family. The suspect remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The name of the Cedar Rapids police officer will be released after the officer’s interview with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
