The Trump administration is gutting the postal service. Does anyone care?

WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, Chairwoman Carolyn B. Maloney of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform and Ranking Member Gary C. Peters of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs today called on the Postmaster General and Chairman of the Postal Service Board of Governors to testify before Congress about recent, sweeping and dangerous operational changes at the Postal Service that are slowing the mail and jeopardizing the integrity of the election:

“The President has explicitly stated his intention to manipulate the Postal Service to deny eligible voters access to the ballot in pursuit of his own re-election. Alarmingly, the Postmaster General – a Trump mega-donor – has acted as an accomplice in the President’s campaign to cheat in the election, as he launches sweeping new operational changes that degrade delivery standards and delay the mail. The Postal Service itself has warned that voters – even if they send in their ballots by state deadlines – may be disenfranchised in 46 states and in Washington, D.C. by continued delays. This constitutes a grave threat to the integrity of the election and to our very democracy. As House and Senate Democrats continue to respond urgently to address the sabotage of the Postal Service, House and Senate Republicans have been missing in action.

“House Democrats, led by Chairwoman Maloney of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, are ramping up their ongoing investigation by requesting that Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and Chairman of the USPS Board of Governors Robert Duncan testify at an urgent hearing before the Committee on August 24. The hearing will examine the sweeping operational and organizational changes at the Postal Service that experts warn could degrade delivery standards, slow the mail and potentially impair the rights of eligible Americans to cast their votes through the mail in the upcoming November elections. The Postmaster General and top Postal Service leadership must answer to the Congress and the American people as to why they are pushing these dangerous new policies that threaten to silence the voices of millions, just months before the election.

“Senate Democrats, led by Senator Peters, Ranking Member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, started an official investigation last week into delays that have already inhibited the delivery of mail, crucial medications and goods, caused by Postmaster General DeJoy. Today, Senate Democrats are calling on Chairman Ron Johnson to immediately begin vigorous and urgently-needed oversight by first holding a hearing with Postmaster General DeJoy and USPS Board of Governors Chairman Duncan as soon as next week. As the Chairman of the Committee charged with oversight of the Postal Service, Senator Johnson must ensure that the Senate holds the new Postmaster General accountable for the destructive changes he has directed that are undermining this crucial public service and pillar of democracy that Americans in every corner of our country count on.”

In a detailed, ten-page letter sent Friday, Speaker Pelosi, Leader Schumer, Chairwoman Maloney, Ranking Member Peters, Chairperson Zoe Lofgren of the Committee on House Administration and Ranking Member Amy Klobuchar of the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration gave the Postmaster General a one-week deadline – until August 21 – to produce a host of key documents and information relating to these matters.

  1. Check out the COVID-19 Posting on the South Entrance door to the Mason City Post Office. Read the lower right corner FINE PRINT – UP 7/8/20;; Down 10/31/20. Clever they remove it few days before election!

    1. I mail 30-75 packages a day USPS. I have never had a problem with them. People bitch, but I suspect they are just on a Bitch bandwagon, and don’t do much with USPS. Tracking, decent service, very good rates – and that’s all it takes – and they do it very well. At the volume of business they do – very little problems…and FREE boxes and packaging – some people are just lazy and complain about a silver spoon.

      1. You might want to tell that to pelosi and schumer, as they think that there is something wrong with the usps.

          1. she’s worth 120 million and her husband more then that. schumer, 900,000.00. i don’t think they are worried about a 1200.00 check, it’s more personnel.

      2. Mailing gaskets, etc. is not the same as mailing in a vote in a presidential election. No-one wants to steal/misplace/lose/destroy etc, your gaskets. Do you suppose that the mail in votes will have a tracking number?

  2. No backbone anymore…the Republican Party would rather have an inferior representative. Trump just hasn’t done the job-period. It’s obvious he doesn’t care about America – just himself. I’m voting for Biden. This is a better ticket, and two smart people who know how to get things done – not so far one way or the other – they have work with Republicans, where Trump has not. Biden can drive a manual transmission ‘vette, and Trump can’t drive a stick(or fit in a Corvette !) That oughta tell you something ! Shape up folks – Time to Dump Chump Trump. he had his chance and didn’t do much with it…

    1. Improved the economy until COVID came, had best unemployment record l have ever seen, more people making better wages thru tax relief..lets watch joe blow it all

    2. HOLN1 makes a couple good points if true, but i can’t think of anything Biden has accomplished during his 40 years of “service”. I DO know he has made numerous false claims regarding things he has taken credit for. He cannot take credit for the ACA – he had no part in constructing it (pass it then we’ll read it). I know he took millions from MBNA. I won’t even touch the Burisma thing. Should we discuss China? He would rather we didn’t.

Stay in the basement Joe, it’s your best bet at a win.

    3. You’re being manipulated by the media. Turn off the cable network news and start talking to smart people.

  3. If the mail is no big issue, why is is that just last week Trump and his wife asked for and received mail in ballots for his new home state of Florida?

Get your head out of Trump’s lying cowardly ass.

  4. For one minute , let’s forget we are in a pandemic and voting by mail . It does look like the Postmaster will be cutting services etc.. making our mail delivery worse than it is now . How is that making America great again ?
Please remember the Postmaster owns a poopload of stock and equities in companies competing with the USPS. Now comes the pandemic. What the country will look like in November remains to be seen. Should we prepare for more mail in ballots being cast . Absolutely not . We need all the reasons we can to dispute the results of the election if necessary.

    1. And yet you are fine with the likes of lying Moscow Mitch McConnell, ass kissing shill for Trump, in the senate for 37 years.
Or Chuck Grassley, formerly decent Senator, now turned Trump lapdog in the Senate for 39 years.
Or the fact that the four top longest serving members in the House are Republicans.

        1. If you would use other sources of information other than Fox News you could possibly be enlightened.
But I doubt that would even have an impact on your tiny brain.
