Rockwell man arrested after early morning assault and vehicle pursuit in Mason City

MASON CITY – A Rockwell man was arrested after an early morning assault and vehicle pursuit in Mason City.

Mason City police say that on October 19, 2019 at about 12:10 AM, officers were sent to a disturbance in the 700 block of South Van Buren. The caller reported her husband was being held at gun point. As officers arrived, they observed a vehicle being driven very quickly from the area. The officers activated their patrol car’s emergency lights and siren in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to stop and increased the vehicle’s speed in an attempt to get away.

Officers pursued the vehicle from 6th St. S.W. southbound on Monroe Avenue. The pursuit continued eastbound on 15th Street SW and again went southbound this time on Federal Avenue.

The pursuit left the city on US Highway 65 and continued southbound from there. The pursued vehicle eventually came to a stop after succumbing to mechanical failure about 3-1/2 miles south of Mason City near Owl Ave on US Highway 65. The driver, 26-year-old Tanner Breiner of Rockwell was taken into custody without further incident.

Officers did an investigation at the scene of where the disturbance had originally been called in and found it to have been a family dispute and that no one was injured. Breiner was charged with the following offenses: Assault while using/displaying a weapon, eluding, three counts of failing to obey traffic control device, open container, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Breiner is currently being held on an $8,300.00 bond at the Cerro Gordo County Jail.

The Mason City Police Department received assistance with the pursuit from the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol.
